Benkler tells us of a popular belief c. 1990:
“…Virtual communities would come to represent a new form of human communal existence, providing new scope for building and shared experiences of human interaction.” (356)
I was seeing this guy for a few months. (Don’t fret- this blog post isn’t going to be an episode of Sex & The City.) Recently, I told him that I’m cutting it off because a few close friends of mine spotted him at various different locations with his ex-girlfriend. When I approached him about it, he told me, “Why don’t you look on Facebook? My relationship status is set as single.” Wow. Seriously?
I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. I decided to Google this “Facebook as truth” topic to see what I get. And boy oh boy- the Brits seem to take Facebook a little too seriously. Not only do they have affairs on Second Life (as mentioned in one of my previous blog posts), but now they’re also divorcing via Facebook! A British husband announced his divorce on Facebook before he actually got around to telling his wife that he wanted one. Don’t forget the strange news about another Brit who murdered his wife because she changed her relationship status on Facebook to single.
Jeez.
Facebook is the new Bible.
