Help With Picking a University

Hello Loves!

I just had a epiphany and I had to share it with you.

Everyone knows if you’re looking at a college, you check out the school, the dorms, the dean, and the academics. But what about off campus? What stores are around? Is it a party school or not? How many people there are nice or mean? Only one person can really understand your questions and help you out the most, a student!

How do you find a student who is going to the school you’re thinking about? Facebook.com of course! Every college in America has a page on facebook. Find your school’s page and click a random person from the friends list. Ask them some questions and add them as a friend in case you have anymore questions.

I did it and I’m learning alot from my Tiffin buddy.

Hope I help a student in need!

black eye friday

I’ve never needed a flat-screen television bad enough to sit outside a Best Buy at 3am preparing to run like heck and beat up some strangers.  In other words, I have never been shopping the day after Thanksgiving for what are known as “Black Friday” deals. Part of me is proud of this, that my family’s tradition is to spend the day eating leftovers, watching movies, napping, and getting into the holiday spirit, instead of waiting in ridiculous lines, trampling over other people and fighting to buy things I don’t need just because they are on sale.

I'm gonna cut a b**** for that blender.

This year was no different. I stayed in working on homework and watching movies like “Elf” rather than going out into the cold to spend money I really don’t have. But there was something different about this year – this was the first year that retailers called the deals offered today “Black Friday” deals in advertising.  The popular phrase has been around for as long as I can remember (coming from the fact that the day after Thanksgiving is the first day that retailers move from the red to the black accounting-wise), but it has never before been seen in advertisement copy for major retail chains.

This year is also the start of another holiday shopping season trend: the use and reliance upon social media. Major retailers have started including plugs for their social media profiles in their advertisements. Sears ads offering deals and discounts on large home appliances show small icons for the Sears Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts. And it’s not just retailers using social media to advertise and reach consumers. Consumers are also turning to applications on Facebook and “tweets” from those they follow on Twitter to find the best deals and discuss specific products.

So, will social media make a difference in revenue today for major retailing chains? Only time will tell. It will be interesting to see if Facebook and Twitter use will make a noticable difference in store traffic, or whether consumers will really be as reliant on social media this holiday shopping season as retailers are hoping. No matter the results, anyone in public relations or advertising should be looking forward to the returns, because this new trend may become a holiday shopping staple, and a case study for further uses of social media.

(here are some articles I read related to this topic: “Black Friday shoppers tweet…“, “Black Friday may be first…“, “Black Friday Sales Ads…”)

Week 10 - 'Personalisation'

Personalisation and customisation is steadily becoming a favoured business model of many online businesses. Many online websites use personalisation as a means of gettin to know customers by observing their viewing habits and from the information gathered, recommends items/services that might be of interest. Many users feel that the process is evasive. Privacy is a massive issue when discussing personalisation; many users would prefer to have the option to remain anonymous.

In my opinion, personalisation is an effective web tool helping you and the organisation in many different areas. Personalisation saves the user time, in terms of entering repetitive details. Users can enter details (such as transactional details) on a website and the website may use personalisation as a way of saving the information for the user to use in the future. Online e-commerce sites use personalisation as a way of recommending you products on the basis of your purchase (search) history.

Amazon is a prime example of personalisation at work. When you log into your account, you can click on your personal account page, which gives details of your purchase history and recommended items.

When I log into my account page, I am able to see dynamic recommendations. These recommendations can enable the user to be introduced to new products/services where they might not have known/noticed before.

Amazon also saves your recent history, so you can easily click your account page and then click the item in question without having to type its name into the search bar. Organisations, such as Amazon, can filter out irrelevant information based on recently viewed products to deliver relevant, interesting products/services to the user.

However, many users don’t like the idea of using their personal information (viewing history) to determine an option. Many feel that sharing personal information is a great risk that can lead to irrelevance or infringements. Certain websites monitor the user’s activity and accumulate adverts based on keywords or user activity. A major example of this type of act taking place is on the popular social networking website ‘Facebook’.

When you log into Facebook, you’re immediately greeted by adverts placed directly at the side of the window. From personal experience, many of the adverts generated are irrelevant and clutter your ‘personal’ space.

Certain aspects of your interactivity is recorded and used to generate adverts. Facebook can pick up on an individual keyword through your Facebook search history or on your personal space and then immediately start displaying adverts, which may not even be relevant.

Examples of advertisements on Facebook

I feel that this is a poor example of personalisation as it can be classed as a nuisance, due to the positioning of the adverts and also due to relevance. But, if you see an advert, which may be irrelevant, Facebook have installed a feature that can enable the user to block the advert to avoid appearing on their web space.

Personally, I feel that personalisation is a great way to interpret data and to present a meaningful array of options to the user. Personalisation in order to be effective needs to be done appropriately without being ambiguous, users need to be told what information is being recorded, in what manner and are they given the option to not take part. Personalisation is a useful in terms of introducing new products/services to the user and to make users aware of certain events/products/services through the use of advertising. Websites can gather customer interactivity and then display adverts based on the topic area. By giving relevant details to customers, they will in turn be more inclined to return to the website due to it’s reliability.

Couple Crashes White House State Dinner

Talk about a security lapse!

A couple from Northern Virginia appear to have crashed the White House’s state dinner last night, penetrating layers of security with no invitation.

While the White House hasn’t provided an explanation, it is believed that this is the first time in recent history that anyone has crashed a White House state dinner.

Where are “Wedding Crashers” Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn when you need them! I’m sure they could give some tips on how this happened!

From the Washington Post:

Tareq and Michaele Salahi – polo-playing socialites known for a bitter family feud over a Fauquier County winery and their possible roles in the forthcoming “The Real Housewives of Washington” — were seen arriving at the White House and later posted on Facebook what appeared to be photos of themselves with VIPs at the elite gathering.

“Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!” one of them wrote on their joint Facebook page at 9:08 p.m.

But a White House official said the couple was not invited to the dinner, not included on the official guest list, and were never seated at a table in the South Lawn tent.

A woman describing herself as a publicist for the Salahis denied that they were interlopers. Pressed for details, Mahogany Jones sent a statement saying simply: “The Salahis were honored to be a part of such a prestigious event ….. They both had a wonderful time.”

How could it happen? A former White House senior staffer — who more than a decade ago encountered a crasher at one of the executive mansion’s less-fancy parties — offered this theory:

A savvy pair of crashers, dressed to the nines, might arrive on foot at the Visitor’s Entrance, announce their names — then express shock and concern when the security detail at the gate failed to find them on the guest list. On a rainy night like Tuesday, with a crowd of 300-plus arriving, security might have lost track of or granted a modicum of sympathy to a pair that certainly looked like they belonged there. If their IDs didn’t send up any red flags in the screening process, they would be sent through the magnetometers and into the White House.

If Your Tweet’s an Ad, Prepare to be Unfollowed

A growing number of Tweeters are jumping on the ad bandwagon to make money off their networks by allowing advertisers to use their identity and tweet their followers.

Ad.ly, Izea and Peer2 are three key players in this new consumer-to-consumer advertising strategy that is attempting to create an alternate marketing channel in the face of largely ignored ads delivered via print, TV or online media. The idea is that your Twitter followers will pay attention to (and place more trust in) an ad delivered by you as someone they respect.

According to Joey Caroni, co-founder of Peer2, “We don’t want to create an army of spammers, and we are not trying to turn Facebook and Twitter into one giant spam network. All we are trying to do is get consumers to become marketers for us.”

For tweeters with lots of followers, the payout can be significant – up to $10k for a celebrity who pushes a tweet ad – but the bigger opportunity in the minds of these companies is to marry topic experts with smaller brands to push their products. For example a running guru might accept payment to send a ‘tweet’ that promotes a new shoe – and by doing so her followers may choose to buy the product.

Deception and Exploitation

Paying consumers to insert ads in what is supposed to be their own thoughts isn’t new – Izea already has a service called PayPerPost that pays bloggers to pitch products to their readers – when first launched it was not transparent that the ‘posts’ were in fact paid ads, and the company was sharply criticized for the deceptive practice. Now, ads are more clearly marked but the sleaze factor remains.

Most Internet users do not want their online relationships and dialog sullied with commercial content. Even when deception isn’t a factor, why follow someone whose comments are based on profit, or at a bare minimum, sees your relationship as something to financially exploit?

Tech blogger, Robert Scoble, explained it this way in a New York Times article. “It [advertising within your content] interferes with your relationship with your friends and your audience.” Scoble also noted that he “unfollows” people on Twitter who send him ads.

My Promise

No content on ilookbothways.com, and my twitter account http://twitter.com/LindaCriddle has ever been influenced by profit. We do not, nor will we accept advertising. Right or wrong, the content we provide represents the best advice we have to give.

If I recommend a product, – and I do from time-to-time – it is because I genuinely recommend it. There is no financial compensation for doing so. Period.

When I follow someone’s blog, tweets, or comments, I do so because I want their honest take. If their comments are motivated by ad revenue, the honesty of the interchange is gone and so am I.

Linda

Social Networks

This week on Monday’s session our case topic was the social networks. We were asked to make brain storming and discuss the following issues :

  • What types of social networks are there?
  • How are social networks structured?
  • What type or roles and connections can people in a network have?
  • What type of roles and connections you have? How do networks affect your Insight Project?
  • What ways are there to leverage social networks?
  • Are there any ways to quantify social network metrics?
  • What does social capital mean?

Well, what can I say about them… Social networks are like oceans which accommodates thousands of creatures (people), environments (groups) and activities to keep survive like hunting (like socializing and becoming popular). There’s like a mutualist relationship between the social network site providers and the users. The providers make profit and the users use the ability to keep in touch with their friends, relatives, etc and have the chance contact with new people. In addition to that, some users can even make some money by creating applications for that web site, if there’s an API for that.

However, when talking about social networking sites, I think people should consider one very import thing: When they sign up to a site, usually they give most of the information about themselves without questioning the risks in that. More to that, those sites get even more information about you as you become an active user by participating activities, and so on. For instance, Facebook keeps every photo that you upload, information about your relatives, friends, relationship status, sex, religion… anything… Of course you can keep it strict by limiting the information that you give them from the beginning. On the other hand, the question at this point is that, if we really do need social networking sites or not. Isn’t it possible to just keep a phone book, or maybe something more fancy?

Well, maybe it was a bit pessimistic look through to the social networks, but it’s better to criticize these platforms from such angle instead of using them blindly.  or don’t know… maybe it’s better just to enjoy socializing for now =)

As Afghans Resist Taliban, U.S. Spurs Rise of Militias-NYT.

Sounds encouraging. But national feelings being what they are,if US continues to meddle in Afghanisthan’s affairs, the same militia that is taking up arms against Taliban, shall take it up against US as well and that would be far more dangerous as this group will be fighting for National Soveignity.Better US leaves the place and provide military hard ware and advice if the people requested for it.

Story:

ACHIN, Afghanistan — American and Afghan officials have begun helping a number of anti-Taliban militias that have independently taken up arms against insurgents in several parts of Afghanistan, prompting hopes of a large-scale tribal rebellion against the Taliban.

Leaders of anti-Taliban militias in Kunduz Province met with the Afghan government’s intelligence chief in Kunduz this month.

Members of the Afghan National Police, above, passed an abandoned Russian Army vehicle on a patrol near a village in Kunduz Province.

The emergence of the militias, which took some leaders in Kabul by surprise, has so encouraged the American and Afghan officials that they are planning to spur the growth of similar armed groups across the Taliban heartland in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

The American and Afghan officials say they are hoping the plan, called the Community Defense Initiative, will bring together thousands of gunmen to protect their neighborhoods from Taliban insurgents. Already there are hundreds of Afghans who are acting on their own against the Taliban, officials say.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/world/asia/22militias.html?_r=1&nl=todaysheadlines&emc=a1

The endeavor represents one of the most ambitious — and one of the riskiest — plans for regaining the initiative against the Taliban, who are fighting more vigorously than at any time since 2001.

Tween fans lose control at mall

Sat Nov 21, 1:49 pm ET

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Police on Long Island had to shut down a mall appearance by teen pop singer Justin Bieber after thousands of young girls showed up, and got a little too wild.

Girls and adults in the Friday crowd of nearly 3,000 started pushing and shoving as they waited for the 15-year-old to show at a clothing store at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City.

Bieber’s appearance was still two hours away when things got out of hand. Five people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

“People started screaming, ‘Justin!’ And they ran forward and the ropes collapsed,” said 13-year-old Aimee Macchi. She said she was knocked to the floor in the rush. “Everyone was pushing. There was no room to breathe.”

Police arrested a vice president from Bieber’s record label, Island Def Jam Records, saying he wasn’t cooperating with attempts to disperse the crowd.

James Roppo, 44, of Hoboken, N.J., was charged with a series of misdemeanors, including endangering the welfare of children and obstructing governmental administration.

“We asked for his help in getting the crowd to go away by sending out a Twitter message,” said Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Kevin Smith. “By not cooperating with us, we feel he put lives in danger and the public at risk.”

Island Records, which released the Canadian teen’s first album, “My World,” this week, apologized to fans in a written statement.

Some kids and their parents had camped out before dawn for the 4 p.m. event.

Bieber never made it into the building.

“They are not allowing me to come into the mall,” he said in a message sent to fans through Twitter, the social networking service. He wrote that police had threatened to arrest him if he didn’t leave.

Bieber came to the attention of the music industry when he began posting videos of himself singing onYouTube in 2007.

The Community is the Market

I am reading The Cluetrain Manifesto which was written in 1999-2000.  Some of the points include  ”Markets are conversations,” “Markets want to talk to companies,” and “Markets consist of human beings, not demographic sectors.”  This is the crux of Web 2.0, prophetically described 10 years ago.  Doc Searls, one of the authors of Cluetrain, addressed this in his blog earlier this month.

In 1999 sites like AOL were dominant on the web.  For the most part the “masses” were using those services, and businesses had to use those services to reach those masses.  Then I remember people began to abandon AOL (and CompuServe and other services available at that time) for the world wild web.   Some of us mocked those who remained with these more structured service providers – preferring to create our own unique web experience.  There were then fewer and fewer ways for a business to reach the masses as the they left the structures of the original ISPs and explored the web for themselves, using a wide variety of software with differing protocols.

In many ways we have come full circle since 1999.  Social Media has become the new “AOL.”  Just as in the past if a business wanted to reach customers they had to set up a presence with AOL, now in order to reach the masses a business needs to have a Facebook page and a Twitter account.  To not have one or the other might spell economic suicide.  A company can create a unique well-designed web presence using all the latest and greatest web development tools; but can no longer believe that just because one builds it, “they will come.”  Unless, of course, they Tweet about it.  They need to be communicating to the markets in the way that the market wants to be spoken to.

The library, as it strives for customer-driven service policies, needs to serve the patrons in the manner that they wish to be served. It should also remember to keep its finger on the pulse of the patrons as the desires of the patrons change. And they will, we can count on it. We want to remain dynamically relevant.  We want to boldly try new technologies to see if they provide valuable services to the patrons.  On the other hand, we don’t want to be afraid to stop doing something that is no longer useful.  As Cluetrain says, “The community of discourse is the market.”

Botnet begins social networking spam run

‘DonBot’ targets Twitter and Facebook users

A major malware botnet has sprung to life and is making a huge spam run through social networking sites.

Researchers at Symantec’s MessageLabs branch said that the DonBot network has begun sending spam emails in large numbers, accounting for as much as four per cent of the total global spam load since 18 November.
The messages advertise a ‘work at home’ programme which promises $300 (£180) a day for posting information online.

“The apparent aim of these emails is to get people to fall for ‘get rich by working at home’ schemes where the victim is encouraged to pay an initial fee for a trial and then sit back and watch the cash come in,” wrote Symantec malware analyst Paul Wood in a blog post.

Clicking on the spam image sends victims to one of any number of Twitter pages which contain links to a third-party site which asks the user to pay the ‘trial fee’.

Researchers believe that the operation uses hijacked and specially created spam accounts on Twitter. Some hijacked Facebook pages are also being used to spread the links.

This is the real Britney Spears! We’ve got updates from her team, her web site and yes, even Britney herself!”.

Namun, tanpa disangka postingan tweet tersebut malah memancing seseorang untuk mengambil alih halaman Twitter milik Britney. Ya, selang beberapa menit Britney palsu memposting kalimat, “I hope that the new world order will arive as soon as possible!”. Tak lama kemudian muncul lagi posting lainnya, “I give myself to Lucifer every day for it to arrive as quickly as possible. Glory to Satan”.

(Indah PM)

facebook

… has lost some of it’s charm.

I think it’s the post-exam realisation that we waste too much time on facebook, and the proportionate free time effect. The greater our proportion of free time, the less inclined we are to log on to facebook and waste away the hours. But given exam week, suddenly it’s the most attractive thing ever, easily ranking above all the study we have to do .

My inability to stay entertained by facebook for long periods of time may or may not have anything to do with the fact that Bejeweled Blitz! is now available as part of the iPhone app…

Also, the onslaught of random facebook groups continues, with the latest:

“i love how the word ‘bed’ actually looks like a bed”

Think about it.

New adventures in hi-fi with Spotify

In 1974, Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau boosted a then little known musician’s career by declaring, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen”. Fast forward to 2009 and the future of rock and roll isn’t a person. It’s not even a band. It’s an online music service called Spotify. It isn’t just a game changer for the music industry. It’s a first glimpse of the future of all home entertainment.

Spotify is a music streaming service without the need to buy songs to listen to them. It’s basically Apple’s iTunes, except it’s free. 4 million songs are available and it’s legal since major music labels - Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music – are shareholders. Spotify is an attempt to beat music piracy and it seems to be working.

There is a catch. Australia doesn’t have access to Spotify’s delights yet. The UK, France, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden are the current lucky countries. The USA and China will soon have access. However, it’s easy to bypass this tricky geographical problem.

I’ve been using Spotify and it‘s terribly addictive. Remember when you used to make mix tapes for friends, lovers and friends you desperately hoped would be your lover? Spotify allows you to build music playlists and share them with friends/lovers/others who can marvel at your impeccable taste in music. Playlist links can be sent via Twitter and/or Facebook. You can even allow friends to add or delete songs on shared playlists. Recently, Apple approved an application allowing Spotify music to stream directly to iPhones.

The future is now. Some luddites will cling to vinyl records. Some may even persist with CDs. But the majority will listen to music this way once it goes mass market. To be commercially viable, it’s likely all users will eventually have to subscribe. Reliability, convenience and legality means most won’t begrudge paying the approximate $20 monthly subscription Spotify’s premium service costs. I’d certainly subscribe if it was available in Australia.

We won’t own music but will be able to listen to anything any time we want. Movies will be next. And, if Rupert Murdoch and rivals are able to build a similar single point user friendly ‘pick and mix’ delivery system offering a compilation of their individual content, people may be willing to pay for online news. Unfortunately News Corp’s own foray into a similar music system – MySpace Music – is frustratingly clunky so you have to wonder whether they could build a seamless and intuitive integrated online news service that people would be willing to pay for.

However, if the notoriously antagonistic music labels can work together to sell their collective wares surely media companies can see sense in a little collaboration? Better to get a little money from most readers than no money from all.

Social Networking

A friend of mine sent me a link to http://www.lamebook.com – a website that is something akin to watching a train wreck. You want to turn away from all the horrific stupidity, but it’s just too fascinating. I mean, who on earth would tell a former partner they had herpes over facebook?

This page is a showcase of moronic things that people have posted on the social networking site, such as pictures of blood-stained sheets, break-up messages and admissions of hit-and-run driving offences. One girl, and I kid you not, even posted a photo of a positive pregnancy test with the caption, ‘How am I going to tell the father?’*

I can’t even begin to imagine what goes through someone’s mind when they sit down at their keyboard, log on to facebook and begin to type “Do they speak English in London?”, “I didn’t know I was eating actual lamb when I ate lamb chops” or “Soon to be divorced”.

ViSalus Vi-Net Integrates Directly With Social Media For Relationship Marketing

Originally posted at www.DirectSellingNews.com

For ViSalus Sciences, in an industry built on relationship marketing, the advent and proliferation of social media raises a lot of questions—and opportunities. The relationship between a direct seller and its prospects is a long way from the ones found on Match.com or eHarmony. But they do have things in common.

On every social media site or blog, everybody hopes they find people with mutual interests, and in the best of all possible worlds, you strike up long-term relationships.

But it’s a delicate balance in our industry. We’re learning that there’s no payoff in a “Join my company!” or “Buy my product!” approach. Instead, relationships in the virtual world are built in much the same way as they are face to face. They evolve slowly and intentionally. But whether the relationship develops over a cup of coffee or a keyboard, the relationship itself is the key to having people know, like and trust you.

Best of Both Worlds

For 4-year-old ViSalus, the decision to encourage distributors to build relationships through social media was a no-brainer. It was a matter of efficiency, as well as vision.

“Network marketing is about creating relationships and communication and working together,” Chief Marketing Officer Blake Mallen says. “The new social media tools are the most effective platform to communicate.”

The wellness company so strongly believes that social media marketing is the future of the industry that it has coined the term fusion marketing, which takes the tried-and-true traits of traditional direct selling and unites them with today’s technology.

The cornerstone is Vi-Net, an invitation-only online community of distributors—and customers—on ViSalus’s Web site. Vi-Net is the company’s go-to place for online training, sales tips and business-management tools. It’s home to blogs, pictures and chats among the ViSalus community. But here’s the differentiator: Vi-Net also provides instant connections with key social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Anytime a member updates Vi-Net, the system automatically updates their sites on Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and others.

The effect of Vi-Net on ViSalus’s growth has been amazing, Mallen says. “We’ve seen retention go up and new enrollments increase. But the biggest thing is that it’s just fun. It brings out people’s personalities and creates an awesome culture that helps bring people together and make them feel like they’re part of something. It’s all about fostering relationships.”

Update Status Facebook via Blackberry tanpa perlu punya Blackberry!!

(wuidiiih Blackberry gan..serasa gimana gitu yg update status via Blackberry… :muntah:).

  2. Download Software Simulator for Blackberry disini. Sekitar (80Mb-dgn OS Versi terbaru)
  3. Lalu download Emails & MDS Service Simulator disini. (50Mb)
  4. Install kedua Software diatas.
  5. Apabila semuanya sudah terinstall silahkan launch MDS. (default: start->all programs->research in motion->Bb Email and MDS Service Simulator->MDS.exe)
  10. Sekarang silahkan anda membuka aplikasi Facebook for Blackberry anda..

Social Media News 11/7/09

Welcome to the Social Media News double-hitter! This week’s post will also cover last week’s headlines in social media. For the first time since I’ve been writing the Social Media News, I missed last week’s recap due to illness as well as being out of town. So here’s a two-for-one post to make up for it.

Twitter’s new List feature has been the talk of the town in social media during the past two weeks.  I first made mention of the new feature in the 10/23 SMN post.  Since then, there’s been thousands of articles and blog posts written up about Lists. Some of my favorites are these: Twitter Lists:  FAQ and Strategies, Twitter Lists and Real-Time Journalism, 4 Ways News Organizations are Using Twitter Lists, and The Brilliance of Twitter Lists and Suggestions for Improvement.  Twitter Lists are fantastic for grouping tweeps based on interest or profession, organizing various Twitter streams into topic categories, and allowing users to quickly access specific tweeps without having to be a follower. More over, an unexpected benefit from Lists is the creation of another way to judge popularity, authority and/or influence of every Twitter user: each Twitter profile displays how many times a user has been “Listed”.  In addition to how many followers one may have, the number of Lists that a user has been listed on gives us a quantitative value of their Twitter social status.

Lists have been praised as the most useful improvements ever made on Twitter. However, the TwitterPeek is a new gadget hailed as one of the most useless Twitter tools of all time. The TwitterPeek is a small, smartphone-sized device meant for one thing, and one thing only: connect you to Twitter. It doesn’t do anything that just about any smartphone can’t do, and I believe the price tag is a little steep for a one trick pony: $99 for six months of service ($8/month after that), or $199 for a lifetime service plan. I much rather have a new Coach wallet, thanks.

On Wednesday Apple announced that it’s iTunes App Store has reached 100,000 iPhone apps. But as ReadWriteWeb reports, new data from AppsFire reveals that of those 100,000 available apps, only about 20% of them are currently used. The other 80% of apps are not actively installed on iPhones, iPods or iTouch devices. Classic 80/20 rule. Click here for the long-tail graph from AppsFire.

Following the news of Bing and Google’s deals with Twitter to include tweets in search result a few weeks ago, Google announced a new Google Labs experiment its calling Google Social Search. Here’s the idea: you create a social graph on your Google user profile by linking all of your social networking accounts like Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed as well as Google products like YouTube, Picasa and Blogger. Once your social graph is complete, information from those networks will be integrated into Google search results.  When you search Google for a product, service, destination, or anything else, recommendations and comments from your friends, family and other contacts would be displayed alongside the normal Web results on the search page. In this way, the Google search engine becomes a recommendation engine. If this idea becomes mainstream, it will be a game-changer for SEO and SEM marketers, as organic search listings will compete against word of mouth from the user’s social circle. Watch the demo video and get all the details straight from the Google blog, and be sure to check out this great article from ClickZ: Social Media, Meet Search.

The Coming Real-Time Search Earthquake

If you’ve ever done a search online for information about a breaking news story, you’ve come close to experiencing real-time search. We’re about to see the inclusion of content into search engines in near real-time, meaning that once content is authored, be it tweets in Twitter, status updates in Facebook, or pictures pushed to Twitpic, that content will virtually instantly be available in a search engine’s results.

Push-Pull Marketing

Real-time, especially as it relates to news events, is best served in a push rather than a pull approach to information:

  • Push – information is “pushed” toward the prospective and often passive buyer
  • Pull – the consumer actively requests the product / information and “pulls” it through the delivery channel

In media and advertising there is a groundswell of movement switching to pull and away from push, and is often viewed as a shift in power to the consumer away from advertisers. The music industry is one of the first to see its platform co-opted as consumers are increasingly customizing music tools to better suit their individual needs.

The search industry is an excellent application of pull marketing. Yet, until now there was a lag between content’s publication and its inclusion in search results. With the advent of real-time search, there is a new approach to thinking about search – and how to supply (“push”) that real-time content out as soon as it arrives.

Applications like Twitterfall have already begun to address this for Twitter’s fire hose of data, and new players like Collecta are trying to find and display real-time content across the web on news sites, popular blogs, and social media.

An Advertising Shake-Up

Google and Bing have now announced their intentions to enter the fray, and have inked deals with Twitter and Facebook to access their real-time data. Imagine the possibilities for an advertiser to frame a specific message in paid search as the web explodes with content about a major event or a competitor’s problem. Similarly, it’s an excellent way for a company in crisis to launch some immediate damage control with its advertising mouthpiece, and ramp up its customer service apparatus as it begins to learn of its developing predicament.

These kinds of marketing opportunities will develop as real-time search matures. The earthquake is not here yet, but the seismographs that monitor the interactive advertising landscape certainly sense the rumblings already occurring in advance of its pending arrival.

Analysis: Facebook Adds One-Half Million New Users Everyday

Mashable broke the news that there are now 400,000 – 500,000 new users registering for Facebook everyday. This number is absolutely astounding. Facebook could possibly grow even further with its expansion to most countries in the world. Facebook is no longer just for college students – as it was in 2005 when I joined.

We are now seeing businesses make “pages” which keeps adding to the network. Facebook is taking over the web – messages are being sent through Facebook rather than through email or instant messaging.

Personally it is very convenient to see someones profile and understand what is new in their lives. Also, without Facebook I would be lost, I would have no idea what some mere acquaintances are doing with their lives.

Without Facebook,  if you lost contact with someone you may have a hard time reconnecting. Facebook does reconnecting and makes users closer to each other. And if you are in the networking mood, Facebook makes it even easier. Facebook adds value for all the users – it is like the internet

Link: WOW: Facebook Adding Half a Million New Users Every Day.

One word of caution though: Facebook cannot do the social networking for the user. The user has the option of connecting or not connecting. Plus, it is up to the users if they would like to expand their relationships back into real life or not.

In the future most people will be on Facebook or a new social networking site. This change from young people to the mainstream has been going since the last year. Facebook  makes the world much more rich in the way we connect.

Durant no place for that here. (Get it?)

I’m the last person that would ever stand up and demand the silencing or censoring of criticism. When you pretend to be a journalist sometimes, you simply can’t think that way.

But if my buddies on facebook were using my wall to give me shit and tear me down, they wouldn’t be around for long. Facebook is supposed to be like the therapist’s couch—a safe place where you can communicate to an audience that really doesn’t give a damn.

Unless of course, your name is Kevin Durant.

KD, as he will be henceforth referred to, has one of the best Twitter streams around. He’s candid and personable. These tweets are replicated on his facebook page, and the comments come in droves. Negativity isn’t a surprise, but it shouldn’t be a given either. If I were him, I wouldn’t put up with it.

That OT loss to the Lakers had to be draining as hell, emotionally and physically. Then, he takes on a bigger burden of responsibility than he needs to because he understands who he is and what he means to the Thunder and the NBA, and it turns into a platform on which to ridicule him. If it doesn’t seem fair, it’s because it’s not.

This is fair. This is cruel but fair. Wang’s comment is pointless and mean, and Talbert’s is worse. I don’t care if that is the approved version of the N-word,  it’s the same, intolerable word.

You can rip KD on the Thunder website, on any given sports story and on this blog or any other. But he, and other celebrities bold enough to put themselves on facebook and Twitter without hiding behind a P.R. buffoon should have the same expectation of support that you and I have.

NaNoWriMo...?

A couple weeks ago I had a dream.  It was kind of a crap ass dream, and I mentioned it on facebook.  A friend, who is far more of a writer than I am, told me it sounded like the basis for a great story.  I got to thinking she was quite right.  Then I realized November was only a few days away, and maybe I’d consider the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).

Then I realized that’s not at all possible.  At all.  For starters, I have a hard time focusing on anything.  Secondly, I’ve got a costume to make, because I’m suddenly obsessed with Steampunk, and it gives me a new excuse to make stuff.  But this story refuses to die, which is fine.  I’m not sure I’m the person to give it life, but I did dream it, so I figure I have to try.

Therefore, I’ve decided to rename November for myself: AtToWriSoMo: Attempt to write something month.  And so it begins.  Maybe.  If I can remember how to write.

Ganti Rugi 711,2 Juta Dolar AS untuk facebook

The Downside Of Social Networking...

Stephen Fry has 'retired' from Twitter due to some hurtful tweets.

I am a sucker for using social networking sites, these include various forums, Facebook and Twitter. I find that most forums, apart from one or two that i’m a regular on, contain 50% idiots and 50% nice people. The few that i am a regular on are very respectable forums – hence why i’m a regular!

Anyway, the reason i bring all this up, is because Stephen Fry has threatened to leave Twitter today, as he finds some peoples words on there harsh and hurtful. Now, i don’t know EXACTLY what was said to him, but i totally feel his pain as i know that it’s a common problem to find yourself being bullied online. How anyone can have the nerve to insult him anyway is just beyond me – he’s one of my favourite personalities on TV and has been around for years…most people on Twitter aren’t even fit enough to tie his shoe laces. I find it very dissapointing that this has happened, because i saw him not so long ago on a chatshow here in the UK speaking about how much he adores Twitter . Now this person has obviously gone and ruined all of that joy for him.

I myself have been caught out on social networking sites. Not only have i been on the receiveing end of insults, but i do admit to giving the odd one out now and again. I did recently pay the price for that however and have since apologised…

I find it pretty weird how we can now be open to insults whilst just sitting here in our living rooms, minding our own business, browsing the Internet. I remember when i was younger, the only chance of me receiving an insult was if i left the house or did something at home to irritate the family…they were insults from ‘real’ people, not people who think they’re big because they’re typing to you through a box – but would they dare say those things to your face? I think not.

Then there are the horrid stories you hear on the news about children being abducted and abused via these networking sites, and it just makes you start to really fear for the future doesn’t it? It makes me think that the world was such a better place without computers, and that in years to come things will only start to get worse when we start to rely on computers for EVERYTHING in life…even school  teachers won’t exist in years to come – i get the feeling everything will be computerized.

Anyway, i would just like to ask anyone who is on twitter to let Mr Fry know that he is loved and that we all want him back! You can do that by using the hashtag #stephenfrymuststay . Here are some people who have already done this, me included  http://twitter.com/search?q=%23stephenfrymuststay#search?q=%23stephenfrymuststay

Play safe.

Facebook and The Ghosts of Marriages Past

Ahh, the world of social utilities.  The hot spot for narcissists and prom queens.  The place to reconnect with all the people you went to high school with and who you really never cared to connect with again, but hey – it’s kinda cool cuz your “friend list” grows.  The place to mess with friends’ statuses should they unwittingly forget to logout.  (Won’t everyone be surprised to learn your friend Jayson is gay or that Susan, in fact does, “like it rough.”) Oh, and let’s not forget, the place where everybody cares about the stupid crap you are doing every single moment of every single day.  All this greatness must come with a drawback, right?  And, I’ll tell you what it is: the sneaky advertisements lurking around every corner.  Sometimes I feel like big brother IS watching.  Just the other day the ad said, are you a restaurant manager? “Umm,” I slowly whispered while checking over both my shoulders, “Yes, I am.” How in the hell do the people at Facebook know these things?

But wait, it gets worse.  Much worse.  Bone chilling in fact.  It’s frightening enough to make your skin crawl and to send shivers down your spine.  The “you may know” feature.  How do you know, Facebook, who I may know?  And, why, for the love of all that is holy, are you always right?  And, furthermore, Facebook why would you do something so cruel as to say “you may know” and feature beneath that the name and picture of my ex-husband.  Now you’re speaking “know” in the biblical sense, I presume.

The image of a man, I haven’t spoken to in eleven years, is now staring me in the face on All Hallow’s Eve.  Frightening? Yes.  Weird? Definitely.  Awkward? Not so much.  So here he is.  Joe X, playing with His dog in front of His big screen TV in His house (presumably His New Wife is taking the picture).  It seems so long ago that we were an intimate part of one another’s lives.  A tiny family unit.  All the memories of Christmases, Thanksgivings, parties, quiet moments and fights come rushing back.

So thanks, Facebook, for the memories of something I was still trying to forget.  I appreciate it.  With all of the great things you offer in a “social utility,” I hope you’ll forgive me if I now cancel my account to maintain a little bit of my privacy and what is left of my sanity.  Jerks.
