Sometimes I’m led to think that those who spend a lot of their time each day on Twitter, Facebook and blogging don’t have lives. However, there are many people who live busy lives and still have time to tweet up and update their statuses and blogs. Even celebrities are into the social networking trends. I view social networking as a form of public relations to help connect with consumers or fans through the internet. So for celebrities to embrace this form of communication is a smart thing to do. Two celebrities that are PR kings in this arena would be Dwight Howard (Center for the NBA Orlando Magic) and Ashton Kutcher (Hollywood actor). Through their efforts, both have them been able to connect with their fans and create a good image for themselves.
By the numbers: Dwight Howard1,416,428 Twitter followers on @dwighthoward
439,813 Facebook fans
137 blog posts since Feb. 2008
Ashton Kutcher4,255,935 Twitter followers on @aplusk
3,218,666 Facebook fans
Both these guys lead pretty busy lives, but still have time to have Twitter and Facebook accounts and post on them regularly. When you go to both of their Twitter accounts, you’ll see that they not only post things, but engage in two-way communication with other fellow tweeters.
They even did some fun contests through their social networking. For example, Dwight was giving out free copies of NBA Live 10 video game and was doing it by posting trivia questions on his Twitter and Facebook and whoever responded first with the right answer, he’d give them a copy. Another example is when Ashton took on CNN to see who could reach 1,000,000 followers on Twitter first, (which he won).
Some people still don’t understand why they should use Twitter, Facebook, or blog. I’ve heard people say “Why blog when I already have a website? It does the same job.” and “I don’t see how Facebook can benefit my business profitably.” These people haven’t grasped the concept that it’s main benefit is to communicate and build relationships with their consumers.
The lesson we can learn from these Dwight and Ashton is that you can never be too busy to post something new or communicate with others online. Even though it may seem a minuscule thing to do, it’s a great way to solidify loyal consumers and fans and have some fun with it along the way. Give it a try if you haven’t yet and remember that it’s not solely for self-promotion and direct profits, but for getting on the same level as your consumers.
PR for persons (socialmedia wise), Dwight Howard is king, so is Ashton Kutcher.
