Twitter Rationale

It hs become a come feature of many website to allow visitors to comment on the things they experience on that site.  Amazon allows people to comment on the various products they sell based on their experience with those products.  News sites allow readers to comment on the articles they read their.  YouTube allows people to comment on the videos they watch.  Many blogs, like this one, allow people to comment on the posts made to the blog.

These comments build content and value for the owners of the websites and blogs.  But, there are a few holes in this arrangement:

First, the comments are only seen by visitors to that website.

Second, and more important, the person leaving the comment is leaving bits of their opinions and their likes and dislikes in a thousand different places.  This is where twitter comes in.  A person wanting to comment on a product, news article, or blog can now post that comment to their twitter feed.  So, instead of sharing our opinions with a bunch of people we don’t know, we can now share our opinions with a community of people we do know: our followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook.

This use of  Twitter fills a different need than simply posting: “I just got home from work.”  When you share your opinions in this way, you are passing value to the rest of the community and building your “brand”.
